21-Year-Old Woman Dies By Suicide Over Dowry Harassment In Kamakshipalya

A 21-year-old newly married woman died by suicide on Sunday in the Kamakshipalya police station limits of Bengaluru, following alleged dowry harassment and torture by her husband and sister-in-law. The incident occurred between 2:30 PM and 11:00 PM at her residence, just four months after her marriage.

The deceased, identified as Shwetha, was a native of Kadur in Chikkamagaluru. She had been in a courtship with 27-year-old Murthy, an insurance agent, before the couple got married four months ago.

According to police officials, Murthy began harassing Shwetha shortly after their wedding. He reportedly tortured her to get a dowry and a motorcycle from her parents' house. He was also allegedly harassing her for not making their love marriage public.

In an attempt to deal with the situation, Shwetha had posted their wedding pictures on Instagram. However, the harassment and torture from her husband continued.

On Sunday morning, the couple had a dispute, after which Shwetha left the house, declaring that she would stay in a paying guest accommodation. Murthy also left the residence around the same time.

Shwetha's mother, Pushpalatha, intervened and convinced her daughter to return home. Shwetha returned to the residence at approximately 2:30 PM. Since she did not have her keys, she took a spare key from the house owner, Saraswathi Bai, and went inside.

At around 11:00 PM, Murthy returned to the house and discovered Shwetha hanging from the ceiling fan in the room.

Before taking her life, Shwetha left a death note blaming her husband and his sister, Narasamma, who is a resident of Rajagopala Nagar. Based on this note, the police have initiated an investigation into the allegations of harassment and torture that led to her death.
