Actor Darshan moves Supreme Court seeking clarity on fresh bail plea

Actor Darshan Thoogudeepa has approached the Supreme Court of India seeking clarification on its previous order regarding his bail in the Renukaswamy murder case. The application, filed on June 25, 2026, requests the apex court to clarify that he may file a fresh bail plea before the completion of a one-year period if circumstances warrant such relief.
The actor's latest legal move comes a little over a month after the Supreme Court declined to grant him bail. During the previous hearing, the court had observed that Darshan could approach the court again after a year if there was no substantial progress in the ongoing trial.
According to Darshan's plea, that observation was intended as a safeguard against prolonged incarceration. He argued that it should not be interpreted as a blanket restriction preventing him from seeking bail earlier in the event of significant developments.
In his application, Darshan contended that the trial has been progressing at a slow pace. He argued that the earlier order should not bar courts from considering a fresh bail request if new circumstances emerge, such as health concerns, prolonged custody, or further delays in the trial.
Darshan has been in custody since August 2025, when the Supreme Court cancelled the bail granted to him and several co-accused by the Karnataka High Court. While revoking the bail, the apex court stressed that no accused person should receive special treatment because of celebrity status, directing that the case be handled strictly in accordance with the law.
Earlier this year, the Supreme Court also sought a status report on the progress of the trial, expressing concern over delays in recording evidence. Reports submitted to the court indicated that only a fraction of the listed witnesses had been examined, raising questions about the timeline for completing the legal proceedings.
The Renukaswamy murder case stems from the alleged abduction and killing of Chitradurga resident Renukaswamy in June 2024. Darshan, actress Pavithra Gowda, and several others have been named as accused in the high-profile case. The Supreme Court is expected to consider Darshan's fresh application in the coming days.
