BDA Seeks Permission to Fell 1,128 Trees for 2.2 km Hebbal Underpass

The Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) has sought permission to fell 1,128 trees along Hebbal road to construct a 2.2 km road underpass, prompting the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) to issue a public notice inviting objections.

The proposed project involves building a three-lane, bi-directional road underpass spanning 2.2 km between Hebbal Junction and the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS) staff quarters. The short tunnel alignment is designed to pass via the Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University (KVAFSU).

To facilitate the construction, the BDA submitted an application seeking clearance to axe the 1,128 trees situated along the stretch. Even as the regulatory process is underway, the BDA has already begun initial ground work near the project site.

The felling proposal has drawn massive backlash from citizen groups, who have repeatedly warned about the severe environmental damage the project could cause. Recently, an awareness walk planned at Hebbal Lake to discuss the ecological impact of mega infrastructure projects was cancelled following police intervention through notices.

The GBA has established a 10-day window for the public to submit comments and objections to the BDA's request. Representations can be delivered directly to the Deputy Conservator of Forests (DCF) and Tree Officer of the GBA at the authority's head office, or emailed to [email protected].
