Bengaluru residents shift spending from gadgets to multiple annual foreign trips

Bengaluru has emerged as one of India's strongest outbound travel markets as residents increasingly swap material purchases like gadgets for multiple international vacations each year. Local travel operators report a significant shift in spending habits, with families, young professionals, and senior citizens planning two to three foreign trips annually instead of saving for once-in-a-lifetime journeys.
According to local travel consultants, short-haul destinations such as Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, and the UAE remain highly popular among city travelers. Meanwhile, destinations like Europe and Japan are seeing strong demand despite their higher costs. This trend is being driven by higher disposable incomes, improved air connectivity, flexible work policies, competitive airfares, and long weekends.
For many residents, the decision to travel is driven by a desire for cultural experiences rather than luxury. G Kumar, a local software engineer, shared that he now saves for travel experiences rather than electronic gadgets. Kumar noted that navigating public transport in Japan and trying local food in Vietnam provided lasting memories that stayed with him far longer than material goods.
Families are also shifting their vacation preferences away from traditional local destinations. Homemaker Vanitha Kumar explained that her family previously traveled to regional spots like Ooty or Kodagu during school vacations. However, last year they chose to take their children to Singapore and Malaysia to experience different cultures and museums.
Travel agents also highlight the role of social media in influencing travel choices, with images of scenic coastal towns and hidden cafés inspiring residents to explore new destinations. However, industry experts advise travelers to look beyond viral Instagram locations to find authentic local experiences and value for money.
While rising travel costs remain a concern, many Bengaluru residents are now budgeting for their trips months in advance, treating holidays as an essential investment in personal well-being. Travel operators expect this appetite for international travel to continue growing as more direct flight options become available from Bengaluru and visa processes ease for Indian travelers.
