Bengaluru residents turn to AI tools to preview hairstyles and grooming routines

Over the past year, Bengaluru residents have increasingly turned to artificial intelligence (AI) as personal stylists and grooming assistants to preview hairstyles and colors before stepping into local salons. This technological shift is transforming consultations at establishments like the Rock Paper Scissors salon in Bengaluru, where clients are replacing generic celebrity reference photos with personalized, AI-generated images of themselves.

Grooming and styling professionals in the city have reported a noticeable rise in clients using AI-generated simulations to experiment with their looks. The technology helps narrow the gap between visual expectations and reality, while also significantly reducing consultation times at salons.

Danny, a senior hairstylist at Rock Paper Scissors, observed that this change spans across all age groups, including senior citizens and children. According to Danny, the AI-generated images have cut short consultation times and provided clients with the confidence to try new styles, hair colors, and beard shapes because they arrive with clearer visual references.

However, Danny noted that the technology still struggles with depicting realistic hair textures. While AI hair simulations offer nearly a 10 out of 10 match for straight hair, the accuracy drops to 70 or 80 percent for wavy hair, and down to 40 or 50 percent for curly hair. He explained that professional experience is still required to manage these physical realities.

Local clients are also using AI to guide their broader grooming routines. Bengaluru-based digital creator Avanthika Babu uses AI to break down skincare product ingredient lists and suggest hair colors. She noted that she treats the technology as a practical guide to make informed decisions rather than a final decision-maker.

Stylists and image consultants in the city are incorporating AI into their own professional workflows. Stylist Gousia Galib Khan, who has seen a clear rise in Gen Z clients arriving with AI-generated inspiration, uses the technology to create mood boards and explore creative ideas. Similarly, image consultant Sonia Pardesi uses AI to quickly map out styling options for clients. Both professionals emphasized that while AI is an excellent tool for saving time and generating ideas, human insight, empathy, and professional judgment remain essential to tailor styles to an individual's personality and lifestyle.
