BNP Protests Municipal Election Delay with Satirical Ceremony at Freedom Park

Over 100 members of the Bengaluru Nava Nirmana Party (BNP) staged a protest at Freedom Park in Bengaluru on Saturday, demanding that the state government immediately announce and conduct the long-delayed Greater GBA municipal elections.
The protesters highlighted the severe impact of the delay on the city's administration. They alleged that the continued delay in holding the municipal elections has deprived citizens of elected local representatives. This delay has left over 13 million residents of the city without corporators or directly accountable civic leadership to address Bengaluru’s worsening infrastructure and governance crisis.
During the demonstration at Freedom Park, the BNP conducted a satirical felicitation of three political leaders whom the party holds responsible, across successive state governments, for Bengaluru’s prolonged absence of elected municipal governance. The three targeted leaders were Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, and former Chief Minister and former Bengaluru Development Minister Basavaraj Bommai.
As part of the protest, representatives portraying the three political leaders were symbolically felicitated. On behalf of the citizens of the city, these representatives were presented with a mock cheque for Rs 20,000 crore.
Through this symbolic act, the BNP sarcastically “honoured” the three leaders for repeatedly delaying the municipal elections. The BNP emphasized that the lack of elected local representatives has left the city’s 13 million residents without any accountable civic leadership to tackle the ongoing infrastructure and governance crisis. The party demanded that the state government immediately announce the dates and conduct the elections.
