Delayed Government Approvals Halt New Bengaluru Metro Construction For 4.5 Years

BENGALURU — The expansion of the Namma Metro network has hit a prolonged pause, with no new construction projects starting in the Hebbal area or across the wider city for more than four and a half years. The complete halt in initiating new transit corridors comes as critical government approvals remain delayed in the administrative pipeline.

The last metro project to successfully break ground in the city was the extended Airport Line, which connects KR Pura to the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA). The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) awarded the contracts for this specific airport line in November 2021, and physical construction work officially commenced in early 2022. Since that project began, no fresh metro construction projects have entered the execution stage.

This extensive delay has shifted the focus of local transit concerns. While discussions previously centered on the late commissioning of existing lines, the primary issue has now become the total absence of new projects reaching the construction phase. This lack of progress persists despite a steadily rising demand for travel and public transit options across Bengaluru.

Currently, two major expansion projects remain stalled due to the lack of required government clearances. These projects are classified under Phase III and Phase IIIA of the Namma Metro network. Among the delayed plans is the 45-kilometer Orange Line under Phase III, which remains stuck in the approval stage.

Because of these administrative delays, the expansion of the city's mass rapid transit system has faced significant setbacks. No new construction has been initiated since early 2022, leaving future routes on hold as BMRCL and government approval authorities remain stalled over the necessary clearances.
