GBA and Bengaluru Traffic Police to Seize and Auction Abandoned Vehicles From July 10

The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), in coordination with five city corporations and the Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP), will launch a joint citywide drive starting July 10 to clear abandoned and unattended vehicles from public roads and spaces.
Under this initiative, authorities will target vehicles left parked for prolonged periods that obstruct roads and pedestrian pathways. The drive will be carried out across all areas falling under the jurisdiction of the Greater Bengaluru Authority.
According to a statement from the GBA, officials will identify vehicles that have been left unattended for several days on roads, open spaces, and other public locations. Once an abandoned vehicle is identified, corporation officials will affix an official notice in the form of a sticker directly onto the vehicle. Authorities will also fit the vehicle with wheel clamps.
This official sticker notice gives vehicle owners a strict seven-day deadline to take action. To prevent their vehicle from being towed, owners must approach the civic body, inform the authorities about the vehicle, and immediately shift it from the public spot.
If owners fail to remove their vehicles within seven days of the notice being issued, the vehicles will be towed away and officially seized by the authorities. All seized vehicles will subsequently be disposed of through public auctions in accordance with prescribed legal rules.
The GBA noted that a similar auction process was previously undertaken for properties with pending property tax dues, which went ahead despite public opposition. The GBA has urged citizens to immediately shift any vehicles left on public roads or other public spaces to their own private premises to avoid facing enforcement action.
The joint drive is being carried out under Section 324 of the Greater Bengaluru Governance Act, 2024, following specific directions from Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda. This initiative follows a recent footpath clearance drive by the GBA aimed at improving pedestrian infrastructure. Additionally, the GBA will take up a drive to clear construction debris dumped on footpaths and roads on the outskirts of the city.
