HD Kumaraswamy Reaffirms Commitment to Mekedatu Drinking Water Project

Union Minister and Mandya Lok Sabha MP HD Kumaraswamy has reiterated his commitment to the Mekedatu drinking water project, stating that the proposed reservoir is designed solely to meet the drinking water needs of Bengaluru and its surrounding areas.
Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Kumaraswamy urged the state of Tamil Nadu to support the infrastructure initiative. He emphasized that the project is designed to benefit both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, and cautioned against using water issues for political purposes.
Kumaraswamy stated that the project will benefit both states and argued that water issues should not be politicised for electoral gains.
The Union Minister also recalled past efforts to push the project forward, mentioning that his father, former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, had previously met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Deve Gowda had led a delegation of legislators to present Karnataka's case for the reservoir.
According to Kumaraswamy, Prime Minister Modi had noted that the issue should be resolved directly between the two riparian states.
The Mekedatu reservoir project remains a key issue for water security and regional politics in Karnataka, serving as a major focus for local leaders aiming to resolve the drinking water challenges faced by the population of Bengaluru.
