Karnataka Leaders Clash Over Student NEET Protests and Pradhan Resignation
A political firestorm erupted in Bengaluru as political leaders clashed over massive student protests concerning the NEET paper leak and the subsequent resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The developments triggered sharp reactions from Karnataka politicians following a viral video showing an alleged harassment incident involving student protesters in the city.
A video circulating on social media allegedly showed a BJP worker aggressively harassing two student protesters after learning about Pradhan's resignation. Reacting to the clip on X, Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the alleged conduct. Kharge also tagged RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, questioning the culture and teachings imparted to members of the organization.
Speaking at a ceremony organized to mark the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas in Bengaluru, Chief Minister DK Shivakumar addressed the nationwide uproar over the NEET exam issue. Shivakumar stated that the Union Education Minister did not resign voluntarily, but was made to resign because it reflected the wishes of students, youth, and the 130 crore people of the country. He said he supported students and young people and would continue to respect their sentiments and protect their interests.
Former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also welcomed Pradhan's departure in a post on X, describing it as a landmark moment driven by the country's youth. However, Siddaramaiah stated that the resignation alone would not repair the nation's education system while the current leadership remained in power, adding that students must continue their struggle.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Sunday the constitution of a high-powered task force on examination reforms, led by technology expert Nandan Nilekani. In a video message on X, Modi said the task force would submit a report and stressed the need for a reliable and transparent exam system with greater use of technology. Modi stated that those who tampered with students' futures were languishing in jail, that fast-track courts had been established, and that new legislation incorporating stringent legal provisions was moving forward in Parliament.
