Karnataka Leads Major States in Mobile Density Driven by Bengaluru Tech Economy

Karnataka has emerged as the leader in mobile phone penetration among all major Indian states, driven by high disposable incomes and a fast-paced tech economy centered around Bengaluru, according to new data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) for May 2026. The state recorded a tele-density of 131.44 percent, meaning there are nearly 1.3 active mobile connections for every resident.
This high density positions Karnataka as the absolute leader among major states, excluding the city-state of Delhi. The figures reveal a significant statistical gap when compared to other highly connected regions, such as Kerala at 123.36 percent and Tamil Nadu at 107.98 percent.
The TRAI data highlights a stark digital divide across the country. While the average active adult in Karnataka holds two mobile connections, Bihar sits at the bottom of the national ladder with a tele-density of just 63.79 percent. This represents a massive gap of 67.65 percentage points between the two states. In Bihar, nearly one in three people do not own a single SIM card.
Nationally, India’s total telephone subscriber base rose from 1,337.54 million in April 2026 to 1,343.10 million in May 2026, marking a monthly growth rate of 0.42 percent. During this period, the country's overall tele-density improved from 93.69 percent to 94.02 percent.
The growth was largely driven by urban areas. Urban subscriptions increased from 783.12 million to 787.71 million, representing a 0.59 percent growth. Consequently, urban tele-density rose from 152.11 percent to 152.80 percent.
In contrast, rural subscriptions grew at a slower pace of 0.18 percent, moving from 554.41 million to 555.39 million. Rural tele-density edged up slightly from 60.74 percent to 60.83 percent. As of May 2026, urban users accounted for 58.65 percent of the total subscriber base, while rural users made up 41.35 percent.
