Metal Chain Stuck in Door Disrupts Purple Line Metro Services at Cubbon Park

Namma Metro services on the Purple Line were temporarily disrupted on the evening of June 25 after a commuter's metal chain became stuck in a train door guideway at the Cubbon Park station in Bengaluru. The incident, which occurred between 7:36 p.m. and 7:54 p.m., halted train movement on the busy east-west corridor, causing delays and overcrowding at several stations during the evening peak hours.

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) shared the findings of a preliminary investigation on June 26 to clarify the cause of the delay. According to the BMRCL, the investigation was conducted by its Operations and Maintenance teams to determine why the train had been held up.

The probe revealed that the commuter's metal chain had lodged directly into the train door guideway. This physical obstruction prevented the train doors from closing properly. Because Namma Metro trains cannot proceed with open doors, the train was unable to move until the obstruction was successfully cleared by transit staff.

Following the incident, technical teams conducted a detailed inspection of the train and its door operating system. BMRCL confirmed that no technical malfunctions were detected in the equipment, thereby ruling out any mechanical or system failure as the cause of the evening disruption.

The disruption on June 25 sparked heightened public concern regarding the overall operational reliability of the Namma Metro network. These concerns were amplified as the incident occurred in the wake of two other service disruptions on the Purple Line within the span of one week.

The 18-minute stoppage forced hundreds of commuters to face delays during their evening rush-hour commutes, leading to heavily crowded platforms at multiple stations along the line before normal operations could resume.
