Nandidurg Extension Resident Illegally Reconnects Unauthorized Street Lights

A businessman on 5th Road in Nandidurg Extension, Bengaluru, illegally reconnected power to two unauthorized decorative street lights on June 25, just days after the Bengaluru Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) had disconnected them.

The resident allegedly used political and official influence to install the lights, sparking safety concerns and complaints from local residents who face poor lighting in other parts of the neighbourhood.

The issue came to light when local resident Satya Achayya raised complaints about the two decorative double-arm lamp posts, which were installed barely 10 feet apart without official permission from the authorities. Following the complaints, Bescom engineers visited the spot and disconnected the electricity supply on June 22.

Additionally, Goutham, the GBA engineer in charge of street lighting, had visited the site on the night of June 21 to assess the illumination. However, despite the disconnection, the lights were found functioning again on June 25.

According to Achayya, Goutham spoke with the resident who installed the poles. The businessman claimed they were necessary due to security concerns. Achayya noted the disparity, stating that a nearby area near her garage, which is frequented by suspicious individuals, has only one street light that has not been improved, while the unauthorized lights on 5th Road were quickly reconnected.

Goutham confirmed that he had directed the resident not to switch on the illegally installed street lights and had disconnected the power. He stated that the businessman subsequently reconnected them by drawing electricity again without authorization.

The GBA has now issued a notice to the businessman, directing him to remove the unauthorized poles within 15 days. Goutham warned that legal action will be initiated if the resident fails to comply with the order.

Meanwhile, residents highlighted that several other roads in Nandidurg Extension continue to lack adequate street lighting. A double-arm street lamp located about 30 feet away from the newly installed poles remains in an unsuitable location and requires urgent attention from the authorities.
