Five Escapes Within Three Hours of the City

Sunrise treks, granite monoliths and cave trails sit just outside Bengaluru. Here is how to plan a clean day trip and be back by dinner.

When the city closes in, some of the best reset buttons are a short drive away. These all work as a single day out.

Nandi Hills

Around 60 km north, Nandi Hills is the classic sunrise run. At roughly 1450 metres you get sweeping valley views, an old fortress and temples at the top. Leave very early to beat both the crowds and the traffic on the way up.

Skandagiri

Also about 60 km out, Skandagiri is the quieter cousin to Nandi. The well-marked trail climbs to a dilapidated 18th-century fort and an abandoned temple, with a roughly two-hour ascent. It is less commercialised, so it keeps a sense of calm that Nandi has lost.

Savandurga

Around 50 km away, Savandurga is one of Asia's largest monoliths and a serious leg workout. It is a favourite for an early climb before the granite heats up.

Ramanagara

About 50 km out, the rocky hills of Ramanagara are great for group outings and beginner climbing, with dramatic boulder scenery.

Anthargange

Roughly 67 km from the city, Anthargange is known for its short trek and cave exploration through volcanic rock formations, a fun option if you want something different from a straight summit walk.

Planning notes: start before sunrise for the hill treks, carry water and sturdy shoes, and check the weather in monsoon season since the trails get slippery.
